Description
1982 was a year that change at the mint caused a healthy amount of confusion among collectors. Rather early in the year the mint changed the design on the Lincoln cent from a mushy, tired design that had been recycled for years to a sharper, more crisp design that pulled elements away from the rim and made them smaller and a bit easier to read. At that same time, the decision was made to break away from the brass composition which was chiefly copper, a now expensive industrial metal in favor of zinc, a much cheaper metal. To keep the coins appearing the same to the general public, the zinc cent blanks were plated in pure copper prior to being struck. This created eight different possibilities between the two mints, two designs, and two compositions. Only one of the eight was never officially minted, leaving seven different officially minted varieties, all of which are represented in this set.
