South Vietnam Navy - Convoy Escort - Bassac River
Measures - 2 x 1.4 inches (5 x 3.5 cms)
LSIL – Support Landing Ship 331 – Phao Ham Tam Set
Support Landing Ship 331 – LSIL 331 provided patrol, gunfire and convoy escort services in the Third Naval Zone and the Fourth Riverine Area. This area included the Bassac downriver from Can Tho and into the Mekong Delta.
On the 23
rd
of March 1966 LSIL escorted the first Allied Convoy ship in almost ten years to move from Can Tho, through the Bassac River to the open sea.
The opening of this channel cut the supply time from the open sea to Saigon by two days. It remained a hazardous journey due to shifting channels and continued gunfire assault from the Viet Cong.
