Description
True Southern Folk Art Pottery by a historic female potter: Grace Nell Hewell.Fabulous quality. Excellent condition. Purchased directly from the famous Grace Nell Hewell.
Artist: Grace Nell Hewell (1933-2016). Jug signed on bottom by Grace on 8/3/2000. Family: Hewell's Pottery, Georgia.
3 1/4" wood fired miniature face jug. Perfect/excellent/mint condition, though condition is "Used". No cracks or chips.
Attributes: Exaggerated Face jug; crazy eyes, buck teeth, bulging cheeks, cupped ears.
Red Georgia clay, beautiful dark chocolate glazed surface, slightly iridescent surface, cobalt blue eyes.
Alkaline-glazed stoneware. Porcelain inserts for teeth and eyes.
Grace's pieces are in several museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Grace was the wife for 62 years of the late Harold "Bull" Hewell, who was the patriarch of the 7-generation clan out of Gillsville, Georgia. Hewell passed in 2012 at the age of 85. Grace is also the mother of her famous potter son, Chester. Hewell's pottery was established in 1850.
