THE OYSTER FEAST
BY JAN STEEN (1626-1679)
Jan Steen was a tavern-keeper and one
of the school of Dutch artists who brought
the painting of interiors and of home and
social life to such perfection. This pic-
ture calls to mind the Colchester Oyster
Feast. For centuries Colchester oysters
have been famous; some were presented
in 1579 to the Earl of Leicester, Queen
Elizabeth's favourite. But nowadays
every trade, however well established,
has its rivals, and it is often said that the
oysters from Mac Fisheries beds at
Helford and in the Duchy of Cornwall]
cannot be surpassed.
